Mule Deer are more common in open areas then their White-tailed relatives. The males grow a new set of bony antlers every year that begin as a small nub covered in a “velvet” skin. In preparation for the rut bucks rub and scrape off the velvet. After the rut they shed their antlers and begin the process over again the following spring.
